Dear Mr. Williams,

On behalf of the soldiers of the Georgia Army National Guard, I wish to thank you for the countless hours you have devoted to teaching the phonics reading program. Through your dedication to increasing the literacy level of our soldiers, they have continued to progress independently, and prove to others they are capable of succeeding.

Your phonics reading instructor program, to be taught in the armory, will enable the soldier to continue improving his skills. Many, many soldiers will continue to profit from your program long after the government funding is eliminated. It is obvious that once these soldiers master the ability to decode a word, they have developed the ability to read with fluency.

Again, I want to thank you for introducing your program to the Georgia Army National Guard and wish you continued success.

The Georgia Peach Corps has utilized the services of James Williams in providing a phonics-based literacy/reading improvement program for members of the Georgia Peach Corps in Tombs and McDuffie counties.

We found the expertise and instruction of Jim Williams to be beneficial for our corps members in many ways.

1. in raising their self-esteem

2. in providing the poor readers with skills to improve their reading ability

3.in training all corps members in a skill which they could in turn use to assist others to learn to read

We found that many corps members used their new skills not only in service projects in the elementary schools and GED training classes, but also with their own family members and friends.

(1) I met James Williams at a Literacy Forum conducted by the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. I was very impressed with his presentation and method of teaching adults to read. In 1991, the Bureau of Training designed WRIP - Workplace Reading Improvement Program. Using Mr. Williams' program all students have made improvement not only in their reading levels but in their self-esteem. Their attitude towards reading has increased likewise.

James Williams has proven himself to be a dedicated professional and has made a significant impact in the literacy arena. He demonstrates a unique ability to deal with a variety of learner populations. It has bee a professional privilege and pleasure to work with him.
