The DVD program by itself enables teachers with no prior training or background to implement the curriculum. Many teachers never learned phonics as young children because the subject was not taught to them in the schools they attended. Not only did many of these individuals fail to receive phonics instruction as young children, many of them did not receive phonics instruction at any point in their schooling up to and including the education courses taken in college to receive their teaching certification. Many teachers are reluctant to acknowledge the fact that they do not have an adequate background in phonics; instead, they simply avoid teaching the subject. This behavior while understandable is unfortunate because research is very clear regarding the fact that anyone behind in reading must receive intensive, systematic phonics instruction if he is ever likely to have the opportunity to read at an independent level.
The teacher has the option to augment each lesson in the video program with his or her own additional instruction. But for the teacher new to the program or uncomfortable teaching phonics, the DVD video series contains all of the information necessary to present the program effectively.
These DVDs enable students to work independently. A student working independently without direct teacher supervision can proceed step-by-step through the entire program with the DVD series. A student can immediately access any and all lessons in the program. A student can repeat any lesson as many times as is necessary to master that lesson. Because the student must pass a mastery quiz at the end of most lessons in the DVD series, both teachers and students can effectively determine whether or not the student has mastered the material in any lesson to the point where he should proceed to the next lesson or instead review the current lesson.
